He BMW M2 Coupe is the newest member of the BMW Motorsport family. It is the sportiest version of the BMW 2 Series Coupé and a clear successor to the BMW 1 Series M Coupé, launched in 2010. As a worthy heir to the tradition of compact high-performance coupes from BMW, enacts dynamism and dynamic balance as its main virtues. To comply with its ancestors, the BMW M2 Coupé brings under its arm a 3.0 TwinPower Turbo engine with 370 hp of power and an aluminum-based weight loss diet.
The Series 2 Coupé has gone through the gym
It is a much more muscular car, which inspires fear of other sports cars and even distrust of its brother the BMW M4 …
Look at its curves. The BMW 2 Series Coupé has gone through the gym and has become the bestial M2 Coupé. Painted in spectacular Long Beach Blau blue metallicIt will also be offered in Alpinweiß white, Black Sapphire black and Mineral gray. Its wheel arches have been widened and inhabit 19-inch dark-colored light alloy wheels. The front is full of air intakes, with the daytime LEDs marking a powerful look that inevitably reminds us of the BMW M4, its older brother.
In the rear, four tailpipes peek out from under the bumper, framed in a more than necessary diffuser, given the maximum speed of this 4.47 meter long sports car. A small spoiler finishes off the boot lid elegantly. Inside, carbon fiber adorns the center console, while we place our hands on a sports steering wheel, only standard in Motorsport with all the letters. Its edging is in blue and red, a clear allusion to the BMW Motorsport colors.
The upholstery also has a blue piping, matching the bodywork or the brake calipers, also in blue. Sports seats are not semi-bacquéts, but I am sure that the catalog of extras will solve this small deficiency.
With 370 hp, it is almost as fast as the BMW M4
If we buy the M Driver’s Package, the limiter will allow us to reach 270 km / h.
The alma mater of the BMW M2 Coupé is its 3.0 TwinPower Turbo engine. It is a six-cylinder in-line turbocharged gasoline, which develops 370 hp at 6,500 rpm, with a tremendous maximum torque of 465 Nm between 1,400 rpm and 5,560 rpm. This engine mounts a specific crankcase and an extra oil pump that allows effective lubrication in the most extreme driving situations, when the vehicle supports high G-forces. As standard, it equips a six-speed manual gearbox, as it should.
Optionally, you can also equip a DKG double-clutch seven-speed gearbox. It is much more effective, and allows a 0 to 100 km / h of only 4.3 seconds (4.5 seconds with manual gearbox). With the DKG gearbox, the BMW M2 Coupé accelerates as fast up to 100 km / h as a BMW M4 with manual gearbox. Weighing in at 1,495 kg, it is 35 kg lighter than an M235i. It manages to be lighter thanks to the extensive use of aluminum in the suspension arms. It also mounts the aluminum axles of the BMW M3 and M4, a marvel of rigidity.
The brake discs are made of composite material, and are 380mm in diameter at the front axle.
On the dynamic plane, an active differential could not be missing. It’s called Aktive M and it allows the power to be actively distributed between the two wheels on the rear axle. The effectiveness of the system has been fine-tuned at the Nürburgring, where the setting for customizable driving modes has also been fine-tuned. These driving modes adjust the response of the controls, engine and suspension to our will. It even has a button that will allow us to drift. But that is another story.
We are left with the return of one of the most beloved Ms, a worthy successor to the BMW M135i – and a worthy heir to the line that was born with the 2002 turbo and M3 E30 – that we can no longer wait to see in action. If I were to buy a BMW right now and I had enough money, my choice would be clear.
