He BMW M4 GTS it arrives like a hurricane, breaking into the top of the sports car food chain. BMW has just introduced us to the most radical and fastest Motorsport in its history. A very special car, whose production will be limited to only 700 units. A special car, focused solely on driving fun. A high-performance machine – and 500 hp of power – where lightness is the paragon and a technological showcase for water injection, for the first time applied to a production car.
Function over form
There will only be a limited edition of 700 units. Exclusivity is part of the BMW M4 GTS.
The BMW M4 GTS follows the long tradition of special editions at BMW Motorsport, now that we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the launch of the BMW M3 in 1986. After legendary machines such as the BMW M3 CSL with 360 hp or the spectacular BMW M3 GTS with 440 hp – launched as part of the E92 generation – it is the turn of the most special and powerful BMW M4 of all time. After having presented the prototype to us just a few months ago, our suspicions are confirmed: very little has changed about that sports car so radical that it instantly snatched our hearts.
Its exterior already exudes power, with a much more aggressive aerodynamic kit than the one fitted as standard by the M4. The grille is blacked out and framed in dark chrome. Its spectacular ultra-light alloy wheels model 666 M have up to 20 inches diameter on the rear axle and Acid Orange accents, popularized by the M3 GTS years ago. The front tires measure 265/35 R19, the rear ones are about 285/30 R20. They use high-performance Michelin Pilot Super Sport 2 tires.
One of the peculiarities of the concept has been transferred to production. Its OLED optics are a great novelty on a world scale. Composed of LED diodes – pixels – only 1.4 mm in size, they use the same technology as your smartphone screen and allow to create a much more intricate design for the rear optics. In the future, it is foreseeable that many vehicles will equip them as standard. In addition to design possibilities, look at the precision with which they allow the different light signals of a car to be created.
Four 80mm diameter titanium tailpipes are framed in the CFRP rear diffuser.
The rear wing is made of carbon fiber and its aluminum supports have been machined with great precision on a numerical control lathe. Inside, the racing atmosphere is unmistakable. The carbon fiber bacquets are lined in Alcantara, as well as a simpler, lighter center console. The steering wheel is covered in the same material, with an orange mark that designates its central position. The seat belt has a detail in the BMW Motorsport colors and the doors have no handles, just simple red straps.
A 100% racing environment that we can still increase with the Clubsport kit, optionally available at no cost. This kit consists of an orange roll cage, in which the six-point seat belts can be attached. Obviously, it eliminates access to the rear seats but I think it is the last of the concerns of the owner of a BMW M4 GTS: it does not have them as standard. In addition, a two-kilo fire extinguisher is fitted as standard with the Clubsport kit, located between the two front seats.
First of all, lightness
The new center console is 30% lighter, its seats weighing half that of the sports seats of the M4.
Not only should it look like a sports car, it should be. He distils the desire to go to circuits and track days, where he is capable of annihilating much more powerful cars. Not only thanks to his 500 CV, but thanks to a strict weight loss diet. A diet that leaves its weight at just 1,510 kg according to DIN standard. A BMW M4 Coupé with DKG gearbox weighs 1,612 kg, making it 102 kg lighter. How has the BMW M4 GTS achieved such a weight loss cure? Well, based on carbon fiber, mainly.
Specifically, carbon fiber reinforced polymers. It is the material of which the roof of the BMW M4 GTS is composed, as well as its bonnet, 25% lighter than the aluminum bonnet of the conventional BMW M4. It is the material from which the front turret bar is composed, as well as the transmission shaft, in one piece. The seats also have a carbon fiber skeleton. The rear spoiler and diffuser are also built in CFRP. Carbon-ceramic brakes are standard, also lighter.
The exhaust system is made of titanium, and it is 20% lighter than the stainless steel exhaust of a conventional M4.
500 hp and water injection for the fastest M ever
It is capable of one lap of the Nürburgring in just 7 minutes and 28 seconds.
But without a doubt, what makes the BMW M4 GTS special is the first application to a production car of a water injection system. My colleague David Clavero has told us in detail how a water injection system works, so I suggest you go through it for a clear and detailed explanation. If you don’t feel like it, I can tell you that by injecting water spray into the intake, the intake air temperature is reduced, allowing an optimized, more powerful and efficient combustion.
The BMW M4 GTS uses the same 3.0 TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder engine as the BMW M4, but its power increases up to 500 hp and its engine speed can reach 7,600 rpm, outstanding in a turbocharged engine. Half a thousand horses at 6,250 rpm, accompanied by a brutal 600 Nm torque, constant between 4,000 rpm and 5,500 rpm. Its acceleration to 100 km / h happens in just 3.8 seconds, making it the fastest M ever. Top speed is electronically limited to 305 km / h.
All in all, its approved average consumption is only 8.3 l / 100 km, emitting 194 g / km of COtwo
It is only available with the DKG double-clutch seven-speed gearbox. When it comes to dynamics, it is expected to be the most dynamic and efficient BMW M ever created. Its set-up is the sportiest in the Motorsport range, with new stabilizers, aluminum subframe on both axles and coilover-type shock absorbers, specifically tuned to be devastating on trackdays. An additional oil pump and redesigned crankcase will help the engine better withstand the tremendous G-forces generated.
In addition to the usual driving modes, the BMW M4 GTS features as standard an electronic limited-slip differential (not a simulation), which allows degrees of lockdown from 0% to 100% depending on the requirements. And the result is clear: the BMW M4 GTS is capable of lap the Nürburgring in a whopping 7 minutes and 28 seconds. In addition to beating the Alfa Romeo Giulia QV, it is 14 seconds faster than a conventional BMW M4. That is the true triumph of the exclusive BMW M4 GTS.
