The Australian manufacturer from Melbourne is in the orbit of General Motors since 1931, and despite not being a global brand, we cannot say that Holden is devoid of history. The same thing happens with Opel / Vauxhall, practically unknown outside the European territory, although their models and their technology are marketed under other GM brands around the world.
An important and striking part of Holden’s past is undoubtedly this model that we present here, the Holden Hurricane. Also known for Holden RD 001, its internal development code, the Hurricane was introduced in 1969 and it was the first prototype for the Australian firm. Born with the intention of developing new design languages and alternative forms of propulsion, the Holden Hurricane has not lost one iota of its appeal. And taking into account that we are talking about a design that in its day, more than four decades ago, was the most futuristic, it has a lot of merit. Now, back in 2011, Holden has decided to dust it off, completely restoring it for public display again.
And it is that the design of the Holden HurricaneConsidering that it was conceived in the late 1960s and how well it has endured the passage of time, it could be considered in my modest understanding almost as art on wheels, despite being a complete stranger. Presented at the 1969 Melbourne SalonIt had a fiberglass body clearly differentiated into three parts: cabin, engine cover and the rest of the body. Precisely his cabin it is one of the most characteristic elements: to allow the driver and passenger to enter the cabin, it is hydraulically raised in an integral way like a science fiction spacecraft. And at the same time, the seats and the steering column are slightly raised and moved forward.
Its engine, a 4.2-liter V8 displacement, it is placed in a central-rear position, just behind the seats, something that at the time was very unusual in street sports cars. Their 262 hp They might seem like a small thing today for a sports car with high aspirations, but thanks to the construction with lightweight materials, really good performance was announced, such as 5.3 seconds to reach 100 km / h from a standstill or 13 seconds to cover the 0-400 meters. Without a doubt, a good part of the fault would also have a worked aerodynamic design.
But beyond its design, innovations that in 1969 would surely seem like a dream were already present in this impressive Holden Hurricane. To name a few, all its instrumentation was electronic, it had air conditioning with automatic temperature regulation (come on, what has been a modern air conditioner) and with rear view camera. further it also included a rudimentary browser, based on magnetic positioning (nothing to do with Gps current) that informed the driver by means of arrows and sounds of which way to take at each intersection.
In its restoration It took no less than five years, since it began in 2006, requiring many hours of work, as well as numerous engineers and designers of the Australian brand. All materials and design respected the original construction, including that striking orange metallic paint.
