Lotus has just presented one of its most selfish creations at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Its about Lotus 3-Eleven, a single-seater based on the Elise, and equipped with the most powerful engine ever fitted in a production car. A V6 of Toyota origin that supercharged by compressor develops the tremendous power of 450 hp. Flagged lightness and the brand’s classic colors – British green and yellow – they have created a car that Colin Chapman himself would have been very proud of.

A registrable racing car

At 250 km / h, the Lotus 3-Eleven develops 215 kg of downforce. It is a really high value.

It is what the Lotus 3-Eleven is. You only have to see its body, sculpted in the wind tunnel. Although it retains the front of the Elise, it is wider and has elements rarely seen in street cars. We are talking about the front splitter – which senses the flat bottom of the car – or a gigantic rear spoilerdesigned to give the car aerodynamic support, not to show off. The roll bar also has a clear aerodynamic function, as does its sculpted profile, set in organic shapes.


Its body is made of a composite material of which Lotus has not given details, except that its weight is 40% less than fiberglass, and we assume that as much or more resistant. Lotus will produce two versions of the 3-Eleven, one of them street and another focused directly on the competition. There are not too many differences between the two. The main difference is that the competition version has a box of Six-speed sequential Xtrac shifts, compared to the manual change of six relations of the street version.

His name gave us clues: the Lotus 3-Eleven will be a car whose manufacture will be limited to 311 units.

Both versions share a rigid aluminum monocoque. Its interior has nothing more than a light seat and minimalist instrumentation. Air conditioning, insulation or a sound system are considered unnecessary luxuries. If it rains, you will get wet. If it’s hot, you will cook. It is not a comfortable car, but in return it is very light: weighs only 900 kilos. A lower weight than a basic utility, but with a power almost 10 times more. Its weight / power ratio is 2 kilos per horse.


The life of the party is a powerful 3.5 V6 engine from Toyota. Although this engine does not reach 300 hp as standard, Lotus added a volumetric compressor, with which it manages to develop 450 hp at 7,000 rpm and a very considerable torque: 450 Nm at 3,500 rpm. With such low weight and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires mounted on 19-inch rear wheels – the front ones are 18 inches – it is capable of accelerate from 0 to 96 km / h in 3.0 seconds. Figures worthy of the high-flying supercar that it is.

Stopping power comes courtesy of an AP Racing braking kit with four-piston calipers on the front axle.

The street version has a top speed of 280 km / h, while the competition version is capable of reach 290 km / h. What we do not like so much is its price, but it is to be expected in a street racing car with almost 500 hp of power. Its street version will cost 82,000 pounds sterling – € 115,340 at the current exchange rate – and its competition version will sell for a price of 115,200 pounds sterling, which is equivalent to a dizzying amount of 162,030 euros.
