Woking’s latest creation, the McLaren 650S already has a convertible alternative from the hand of McLaren 650S Spider.
Endowed with a retractable hardtop Made up of two pieces, the McLaren 650S Spider is presented ready to offer us an even more playful vision of its new sports car, which we remember is located in the McLaren range midway through the McLaren 12C and McLaren P1, in a strange movement that even led us to think of this model as a 12C facelift.
Inheriting the frontal features of the McLaren P1 and adding to the set an extra power to reach the 650 horses we can understand the McLaren 650S as an evolution of the McLaren 12C, although, at least for now, it is not in charge of replacing it despite the proximity in depth and shape with the 12C that according to the brand will continue to be marketed.
After knowing all the details of the McLaren 650S it’s time to meet the McLaren 650S Spider.
A retractable hardtop with a 17 second folding process
The McLaren 650S Spider features a two-piece hardtop that can be shot down on the fly up to speeds of 30 km / h in a process that lasts 17 seconds.
Torsional stiffness remains intact due to the configuration of the carbon fiber monocoque chassis thus avoiding the increase in weight in reinforcements, although the total increase is inevitable due to the presence of the folding system and the roof itself, with a total weight of 1,370 kg, 40 kg more than the coupe. Behind the occupants’ heads, a collapsible glass surface is added to improve the perceived loudness of the engine.
Beyond its condition of convertible, the McLaren 650S Spider introduces as changes with respect to the coupe new parameters in air conditioning and audio to improve the delivery of both when converting.
The evolution of the species: lighter, with a new set-up, a new front and more powerful
Regarding the McLaren 12C, which we repeat will continue to be marketed, the McLaren 650S and 650 Spider, introduce a new front end clearly inspired by the McLaren P1 designThe boomerang-shaped set of optics and the vertical curved design air intakes are of particular importance.
Down the road beyond this frontal changes are also made to the side air intakes and above all, focusing more on the dynamic plane than on the aesthetic, a new rear wing in charge of active aerodynamics.
The McLaren 650S has the same drag coefficient as the 12C, but downforce has been improved at rates of over 240 km / h at the same time that a greater stability of the rear has been gained, in addition to continuing to affect braking.
Developed on the monocoque carbon fiber chassis present throughout the brand and with the Supercharged 3.8-liter V8, we find a power of 650 horses, which represents an increase in power of 25 horses, delivering a couple of 678 Nm.
Performance the McLaren 650S achieves a 0 to 100 km / h in 3 seconds with a 0 to 200 km / h of 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 333 km / h while the convertible, the McLaren 650S Spider, marks the same 0 to 100 km / h with a 0 to 200 km / h of 8.6 seconds and a top speed of 329 km / h.
Too 7-speed dual-clutch transmission has been improved, reducing change times and improving the smoothness of operation at low speeds, between traffic.
The suspension setting has not been overlooked, betting on firmer tuning for springs and shock absorbers, thus guaranteeing a dynamic improvement that, contrary to what we might think, has not affected worse comfort, improving the perception from the cabin and the vibrations of the chassis as indicated by the brand.
It has carbo-ceramic brakes as standard, with its tires being specifically developed by Pirelli.
Alcantara, leather and carbon fiber inside
The McLaren 650S is responsible for brand new two new shades of leather in “Arabica Brown” and “Midnight Blue” for a set that does not lack a good dose of luxury with a cabin bathed in leather, alcantara and carbon fiber.
The carbon fiber extends through the center console, the steering wheel, the doors…. and everything perfectly integrated between the leather and the alcantara that of course are accompanied by contrasting stitching. The sound system signed by Meridian.
