They call him Hulk, it will be because of his peculiar green color, I tell myself, but as soon as I hear him start cold for the first time, I already realize that the Marvel character can be a magnificent name and regardless of the color his body looks like. Of the Mercedes-AMG GT I have had the fortune to drive all its specifications – the Merdeces-AMG GT C Roadster was the last one -, flavors all of them full of nuances where differences exist to make different customer profiles fall in love, from those who are looking for the car of enjoyment even those who crave high performance. But the Mercedes-AMG GT R is far above all that, fighting in a scenario where the rest of the range brothers do not even dare to appear.

The first thing to keep in mind about the Mercedes-AMG GT R is that it is a specification where AMG has given its heart. If the Mercedes-AMG GT is already a car designed from first to last screw in Affalterbach, the GT R is a selection of the best of that car to further refine it and take a leap in performance. And with this approach we find the main big difference that we have found with respect to its brothers, to our surprise it is not an excessively nervous car or Playful, it is a car that requires the driver to drive, but in return can give you one of the fastest lines you have ever done.

Don’t get me wrong, the Mercedes-AMG GT R is a beast that you should know how to tame, both to bring out its best face, and not to be a victim of its rage. Its 4.0 V8 Twin-Turbo engine of 585 hp and 700 Nm in hot V configuration is the main feature of its character, with a lot of thrust to offer in all, and I repeat ALL !, the gear ratios that its fast has to digest dual-clutch gearbox and rear wheels. Although we all know that this engine can increase power, the Mercedes-AMG GT R has plenty of it, placing all the weight of its effectiveness on an exquisite set-up where we find a limited-slip differential, a directional rear axle, adaptive suspension and a traction control calibration that allows up to 9 different levels of intervention. Yes, it is that yellow wheel full of LEDs in the middle of the dashboard, there lies the fun of this car, where after deactivating all the electronic babysitters, you entrust yourself to a traction control that you can customize almost to the millimeter. And immersed inside we find one of the most sporty interiors of the moment, also one of those that offers more lights and shadows. I explain. Mercedes-AMG has conditioned the habitability of the interior to the location of its V8 engine in the central position and the gearbox on the rear axle. This forces the huge central console to appear, which is used to locate dozens of buttons, knobs and controls that give a very striking and personal appearance. When we take shelter in its baquets, of excellent workmanship yes, the feeling is of a certain claustrophobia since the space in width is reduced and the prominence of the console is noticed. The driving position is designed to develop the best experience for its two occupants, with the nose always at the forefront and with an optimal posture for sporty driving. But what we really miss in the interior of the GT R is the presence of greater identity by AMG, since all the controls come from other Mercedes models and some materials do not match the status of this car that comfortably exceeds 200,000 euros in this unit. They are details, not of vital relevance, but to be taken into account for future revisions of the model.

But let’s get back to the point, let’s unleash the beast. Despite the effectiveness of its set-up and the possibilities offered by its technology, the Mercedes-AMG GT R likes to lose its position if you do not treat the accelerator gently or you like to bite the direction. With so much torque and a few Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 that need temperature to feel comfortable, the Mercedes-AMG GT R is a master of oversteer, after the warm up of the footwear it takes the line, and once the warm-up is complete the car asks you for a checkered flag.

The particular configuration of the V8 engine so delayed forces us to be seated almost on top of the rear axle and in a really low position, this is something that requires some adaptation, because we also have in our hands a fast and heavy steering that adds spin. from the rear. This means that the cornering of the Mercedes-AMG GT R is really surprising, and although you often think that you are too thrown to get out of the turn gracefully, with just a little steering wheel the GT R is positioned and devours curves asking you more gas.

It is a fast, effective and even “comfortable” car, but it is possibly one of the rear more fun to learn about oversteer

The pace that the Mercedes-AMG GT R can set is very high and everything about it encourages you to raise the bar, turn after turn, straight after straight. Its engine resonates in your ears with bellows and continuous roars, one of those roars that makes your whole body vibrate, but if you think that the acceleration is one of those that makes you smile, the braking of its carbo-ceramic equipment is one that leaves you breathless. I can honestly speak openly about one of the best set-ups that I have tasted to date, with room to refine if we only think about the circuit, but with a balance in pursuit of effectiveness with no objection. But it is also comfortable! As many of you already know, my place of residence is in Malaga, and I took the Mercedes-AMG GT R there for a surprise that I still have in store for you. Until the moment before the collection of the Mercedes-AMG GT R in Madrid I thought that the more than 500 kilometers were going to be a torture for my back, but nothing could be further from the truth, driving in comfort mode the suspension allows a high level of comfort and its baquets – which grip quite well when needed – do not torment your lumbar. A king at the Nürburgring can be comfortable.

Such a device seems that it may have little to improve, but there are already many rumors that speak of Black Series or the like. After testing what the Mercedes-AMG GT R is capable of, I can only say that yes, this recipe can be improved, it will not be easy and we will not see an exceptional improvement, but climbing that step is possible. Even so, what is really clear to me is that the Mercedes-AMG GT R has surprised me by offering a very balanced recipe, and understood balanced as a car that, being capable of setting one of the best times at the Nürbrurgring, is also capable of reconcile more playful uses without leaving your health in it.
