Wraith, its name alone already inspires the qualities inherent in all Rolls-Royce, strength, power, elegance, distinction … class. Rolls-Royce presents an important novelty at the Geneva Motor Show, it is the Wraith, a luxury coupe with fastback bodywork, a style born in the 30s of the last century. It is based on the Rolls-Royce Ghost platform, but with a 189mm shorter wheelbase, a 24mm wider rear axle and a 50mm lower ground clearance.
It is undeniable to see that it is a vehicle with a more dynamic orientation in mindBut it is still a Rolls-Royce, so you will not abandon the drama, poise, comfort and extreme luxury that have made your ancestors famous. What to say about its appearance, I prefer the fall of its ceiling, elegant and classic, but with a dynamic touch. It will be a much more imposing car in real life, with exclusive details such as a grille slightly positioned towards the interior of the car or huge wheels.
British elegance, 624 hp of power, 5.27 meters long, 2.4 tons … a Rolls is a Rolls.
The doors are opening suicide, a unique feature of Rolls-Royce. Two tailpipes adorn the rear discreetly and luckily the use of LEDs has been streamlined. The exterior can be more or less controversial, but its cabin is thankfully 100% Goodwood. Acres of high-quality leather, and Canadel Panelling wood inserts abound throughout. The roof receives the Starlight headliner, 1,340 fiber optic points that imitate a beautiful starry sky.
In a discreet way, a 10.25-inch screen crowns the dashboard, which is as traditional as the one we can find in a Ghost, but which hides a huge dose of technology, in the form of a voice-activated navigation system, a touch panel on which to write our final destination. BMW has adapted its iDrive, naming it the Spirit of Ecstasy Rotary Controller. The sound system has a power of 1,300 watts, with an 18-channel amplifier.
Consequently, the hi-fi system will emanate music from no less than 18 speakers. The entire interior has been 100% handcrafted with exquisite care in England.
Engine 6.6 V12 with two turbos and 624 hp: the most powerful Rolls ever
In olden times it was said that the power of a Rolls-Royce was “adequate””. Today, Rolls-Royce seems to have Bentley in its sights, and has embarked on a war of power, launching with the Wraith the most powerful car in its history. Your 6.6 engine V12 supercharged by two compressors is derived from the one found in the Ghost, but is even more powerful, as its coupe silhouette inspires. This engine develops nothing less than 624 hp at 5,600 rpm.
It is the most powerful and fastest Rolls-Royce in the history of the more than 100 years of the brand’s history.
Of course, with a huge 800 Nm torque between 1,500 and 5,500 rpm, always with a smooth and progressive delivery, but also forceful. All the power goes to the rear axle, through an eight-speed automatic gearbox, manufactured by ZF. He Rolls-Royce Wraith is able to accelerate up to 100 km / h in 4.6 seconds, still weighing a whopping 2,360 kg. Rolls-Royces were never light, but that is not to say that they are not fast: their tip is self-limited to 250 km / h.
Its combined consumption is 14.0 l / 100 km, but we do not believe that this will matter the least to the person who buys it, since its starting price in Europe will be 245,000 euros.
Dynamic and fast, but comfortable and poised
He Rolls-Royce Wraith It uses an electronically controlled air suspension, which reads the pavement and performs calculations every 2.5 milliseconds. It is firm and limits the rocking if it is going to be an inspired driving, but of supreme comfort if it is what we want. All calculations are made without the driver being aware of it. To further engage the driver in the experience, the steering gets tough at high speed and should give good feedback.
All in all, we can’t expect a Rolls-Royce to rival a Bentley Continental. GT Speed, which is designed with more sportiness in mind. Rolls must maintain a compromise between its historical tradition and the demands of the market. We also do not forget that the Rolls-Royce Wraith weighs more than 2.4 tons in running order, measures 5.27 meters long and has a battle of 3.11 meters. It will definitely be the most dynamic Rolls, but it will still be a Rolls.
Satellite Aided Transmission: the first gearbox guided by Gps
The gearbox anticipates the road and takes our driving style into account.
The Wraith’s eight-speed ZF gearbox has an exclusive innovation on the market, and that is that its control module is supported by a system of Gps, what intervenes in the selection of gears and the behavior of the gearbox depending on our location. Plus, it compares it to our driving style. For example, if we are driving on a curvy alpine road, anticipates to them and retains the march, allowing a more agile exit from them.
The same happens if it detects that we are approaching a highway junction. The driving style is monitored, if we want to be calm, it will have a very relaxed operation. This innovation has required enormous work and has been derived from the experience of BMW in Formula 1, curiously. It is very possible that it will be transferred to other vehicles of the Group BMW pretty soon and again, the driver won’t even know the system is up and running.
Non-intrusive driver assistance systems
It couldn’t be otherwise, the Wraith also has a huge technological arsenal under its skin. The driver will have a night vision system, able to identify pedestrians or animals in the dark and avoid accidents. It will warn us in the event of an imminent collision, although with its adaptive lighting we shouldn’t have any problems detecting them either. If we have an accident, the car will make an emergency call automatically.
The cruise control is adaptive, capable of braking itself in the event of an imminent collision, in addition to maintaining distance with the car we precede. To monitor the maneuvers of series we have a camera of vision in 360º, lest we make a scratch to the very expensive body of the coupe.
Soon we will bring you all our live impressions of this machine, recently presented in Geneva.
